PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria man is facing a reckless homicide charge in connection with an April motorcycle crash that ultimately killed a 59-year-old man.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says Joshua J. Chiotti, 26, has been charged with reckless homicide and leaving the scene in connection with the death of Malcolm Luster. A judge ordered Chiotti to remain in custody until trial following a detention hearing Thursday.
The crash happened April 5 at the intersection of War Memorial Drive and Scenic Drive near Northwoods Mall. Luster was driving the motorcycle and was taken to a hospital with injuries. He died from those injuries about a month later.
Prosecutors say witnesses reported the driver of the car ran from the scene. Police later located Chiotti about a mile away, and prosecutors say he admitted to running the red light and leaving the scene. O
Chiotti was initially cited with a misdemeanor traffic offense. The State’s Attorney’s Office says additional felony charges were filed after Luster’s death and further review of the crash investigation and lab results.
The investigation remains ongoing.
