PEORIA, Ill. – OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute in Peoria is now offering a minimally invasive surgical option for some breast cancer patients and people at increased risk of developing the disease.
The institute announced it is performing endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomies, which remove breast tissue while preserving the nipple, areola and most of the breast skin.
OSF says the procedure is performed through a single, small incision, typically along the side of the chest, which can make scarring less visible.
Dr. Jamin Addae and Dr. Emily Albright, both fellowship-trained breast surgeons, are performing the procedures at the Cancer Institute.
“We are proud to offer this innovative surgical option at our institution and are committed to expanding access to advanced surgical techniques that may provide appropriate patients with additional treatment options,” Addae said.
According to OSF, the procedure may be an option for patients whose breast cancer does not involve the nipple or surrounding skin. It could also be considered by people seeking preventive surgery because of an increased genetic or family risk of breast cancer.
Eligibility is determined individually based on factors including imaging, pathology and a patient’s overall health.
OSF says patients undergoing the procedure also have access to breast reconstruction consultations and other cancer specialists as part of their treatment plan.
