TREMONT, Ill. – Tremont’s crown jewel event is celebrating a milestone this weekend.
The diamond jubilee 60th edition of the Tremont Turkey Festival runs through Sunday. Volunteers were preparing picnic tables and stages on Wednesday in anticipation of the four-day event.
The festival originally started as a fundraiser for the village’s community pool. But Co-Chairwoman Natalie Anderson says it now raises funds for any organization in Tremont.
“This year, we were able to get a large donation to our sports boosters for a new digital sign for our gym, so that was exciting,” Anderson said.
Anderson says other beneficiaries include Boy and Cub Scouts, the Historical Society, and for senior meals.
Festivities for this year’s edition started this past Sunday, with the crowning of high school junior Avery Jost as Miss Tremont.
Other popular events at the Turkey Festival include the Bed Races and Strawberry Shortcake Eating Contest on Saturday, with both located on James St. The festival’s parade takes place on Sunday.
Expected severe weather has impacted some of Thursday’s schedule. Merchants Day was to take place on Thursday, but has been canceled. All events on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are still proceeding as planned.
