WASHINGTON, Ill. (25 News) – Three people were taken to the hospital Sunday after a fire destroyed an apartment complex in Washington.
Washington Fire Chief Tyler Gee said the call came in around 8:15 a.m. from the complex behind Casey’s on School and Grant Streets in Washington.
Gee said 10-12 people lived there.
Several second story window rescues were made, according to Chief Gee. Of those residents, three were sent to nearby hospitals. Their conditions are not known.
Neighbors helped make rescues before firefighters arrived.
Chief Gee said the apartment complex, made up of eight units, is a complete loss.
Total cost of the damage is not available.
Washington, Morton and East Peoria fire departments responded.
The fire is being investigated by the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office.
In a Facebook post, Washington Mayor Lilija Stevens said:
“Washington firefighters were called to a structure fire (an apartment building behind Casey’s on School Street) on Sunday morning, May 31, 2026, a second structure fire within 24 hours in Washington.
We are exceptionally fortunate the City of Washington is served by a highly trained and dedicated volunteer fire department.”
This comes less than 24 hours after numerous fire departments were called to a fire at a supportive retirement community on Newcastle Road in Washington Saturday night, displacing about 40 residents.
