PEORIA, Ill. (25 News) – Peoria City Council member Kiran Velpula is facing several pending traffic charges, including a DUI charge, following incidents listed in court records as occurring on Sept. 11.
Velpula currently serves as an at-large member of the Peoria City Council. His term runs through May 2027, according to the City of Peoria.
Court records show a DUI case, 26-DT-249, was filed by Illinois State Police on Sept. 17. The case lists a Class A misdemeanor charge of DUI involving alcohol, an intoxicating compound or drug. The incident date is listed as Sept. 11. ISP confirmed the arrest on Monday for 25News and we filed a Freedom of Information request for additional information.
Velpula’s first court appearance in that case is scheduled for Oct. 16 at 9 a.m. before Associate Judge Nathan Bach.
The Peoria Police Department filed three additional major traffic cases Sept. 15, all of which also list Sept. 11 as the incident date.
In case 26-MT-1967, court records list Class A misdemeanor charges of leaving the scene and failure to give information or render aid involving injury, as well as a petty offense of improper traffic lane usage.
Cases 26-MT-1971 and 26-MT-1972 each list a Class A misdemeanor charge of failure to notify damage involving an unattended vehicle, along with improper traffic lane usage.
Initial court appearances in those three cases are scheduled for Oct. 30 at 9 a.m. before Associate Judge Caryn Kamp.
Peoria County says its Traffic Division maintains traffic and DUI cases and provides public access to court records.
Available court records do not establish whether all four cases stem from a single incident or multiple incidents on Sept. 11. 25News is seeking additional police and court records to determine what occurred.
25News reached Velpula by phone Monday. He confirmed his upcoming court date and declined to comment further.
The cases remain pending. The charges are allegations, and court records do not indicate Velpula has been convicted of the listed offenses.
