EAST PEORIA, Ill. – (25 News) – Pledging to prevent one of the last remaining sites for potential growth, the East Peoria City Council Tuesday night gave final approval to the city’s purchase of 272 1/2 acres of farmland.
The city successfully bid $5.2 million, or $19,100 per acre, for three tracts of land known as the Keil & Blye Farm between U.S. Route 23 and Centennial Drive at East Peoria’s northwest boundary.
The purchase enables the city to control future growth there, with Mayor John Kahl pledging the land would not become a data center or solar farm. At the July 7 council meeting, city officials said buying the land is meant to create housing.
The city can now close on the purchase and look at long-term development options on the property.
