WASHINGTON, Ill. (25 News) – The 24th anniversary of the September 11th attacks is this Thursday, but people gathered in Washington on Sunday to remember thousands of lives that were lost that day.
A remembrance ceremony was held at the Veteran’s Memorial Park helicopter.
The ceremony included a wreath presentation, a moment of silence, ringing of the bells, music and prayers, and the Presentation of Colors by the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Honor guard.
Event organizer David Houseworth, who is the chief of the Northern Tazewell Fire Department, told 25 News it’s a time to reflect on the lives lost.
“Once they’re forgotten about, it’s like a second death for them. A name is no longer remembered; it’s a second death. It’s so important for America and the world to remember the victims of 9/11,” Houseworth said.
Sunday’s remembrance was the first 9/11 ceremony Washington has had in the past four years. Mayor Lilija Stevens said in a Facebook post that the commemoration will be held yearly from now on.
