PEORIA, Ill. (25 News) – A portion of a West Bluff street has received an honorary designation as D. W. Roscoe McCall Street.
McCall was one of Peoria’s first African-American dentists. He retired in 2007 after 30 years in practice. He died in 2023 at the age 81.
City leaders joined with McCall’s relatives for a street-naming ceremony Friday. The ceremony took place outside the building at 1211 N. North Street where McCall’s dental practice was located. The building is now owned by McCall’s son, Christopher McCall, who operates McCall Law Offices.
His other son, Rev. Steven McCall, told 25 News he wants people to know his dad helped nearly everyone he encountered.
“It’s an amazing thrill for me and my family to know that where my dad came day, day out an applied his trade, there will always be a remembrance, or a reminder that what he did, he did well,” McCall said.
Dr. McCall was also a member of the Peoria NCAAP branch, the Tri-County Urban League and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine McCall and his two sons. His daughter, Tonya McCall, preceded him in death in 2016.
