PEORIA Ill. – After some special conditions were reached…the Peoria City Council has given its blessing to a new chemical plant in the Distillery TIF District.
Council approved zoning changes on Tuesday to allow Nebraska-based Viridis Chemical plans to partner with and build a facility near BioUrja Renewables on the riverfront.
Before the meeting…negotiations occurred between the city…the two companies…and South Side environmental groups and activists to address concerns.
Southside Community United for Change’s Antonio Lipscomb spoke at the meeting.
“Southside united change endorses the special conditions, we would like to have the opportunity to be a part of the hiring process,” Lipscomb said.
City attorney Patrick Hayes says BioUrja requested the zoning change to allow for chemical processing in the area Viridis plans to build on…to help both companies out.
“One of the main production products, what they need to develop their products is produced now, at the BioUrja Plant,” Hayes said.
Hayes says Viridis produces a solvent with ethyl acetate…such as nail polish remover.
Environmental concerns were raised at the planning and zoning commission meeting prior to Tuesday night’s meeting…but Hayes says a compromise was reached.
