ROME, Ill. – You will now need to slow down when traveling through Rome on Illinois Route 29.
The speed limit between Stephenson Avenue and Washington Street has been reduced from 55 miles per hour to 45.
The Illinois Department of Transportation’s Paul Wappel says it’s part of an effort to reduce the number of crashes in the area.
He says there’s also improvements being made to visibility in the area.
“We, along the IDOT rightway, are going to relocate some signs, but we also trimmed some trees to enhance visibility,” Wappel said. “And we’re going to relocate some signs on the outside of Route 29 to the median to limit distractions near some intersections.”
Wappel says state police have also agreed to increase enforcement in the area.
A Chillicothe couple lost their lives in a two-vehicle crash in August when state police say their motorcycle failed to yield at Illinois Route 29 and Knox Street in Rome.
