PEORIA, Ill. – When it comes to personal fireworks this Fourth of July, if it flies in the air and explodes…it’s probably illegal.
Peoria Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger lists a few fireworks and novelty items that are safe to use.
“Your sparklers, your snap pops, those are the most common things that you see. Those are all legal,” Sollberger says.
Snakes or Glow Worms, Party Poppers, Toy Caps and Smoke bombs are also legal to use in Peoria.
Handheld fireworks, Bottle Rockets, Roman Candles, Pinwheels, Firecrackers and Sky Rockets are prohibited in Peoria.
Sollberger says most reports of illegal fireworks within the city limits are “complaint driven”.
“What that means is someone notices it in their neighborhood. They call 9-1-1 and we’ll go out there…if the activity continues, they can be cited, and be given that citation of $250 dollars,” Sollberger says.
Fireworks deemed illegal in Peoria are ones that can cause serious injuries and fires.
“We will have a house fire, just like we did in years past, with a firework igniting a bush, catching a home on fire,” Sollberger says.
The chief suggests leaving the big fireworks to the professionals…by coming to the “Choose Greater Peoria Red, White and Boom” show on the Peoria and East Peoria riverfronts Thursday night.
