WASHINGTON, Ill. — Storm damage brings scammers out in droves.
Washington Police Chief Mike McCoy says his department has fielded a number of calls this week about people going door-to-door, offering to do roofing work.
“With all the hail last week, that was reported in certain parts of town, we’ve been flooded with companies, most of them not from our area, out of state companies were here, they follow the weather and were knocking on doors,” McCoy says.
McCoy tells WMBD’s “The Greg and Dan Show”, scammers going door-to-door often take off once they have payment. And, if they do the work, it’s typically shoddy.
For that reason, Washington has an ordinance in place that bans door-to-door sales, especially for services, without a permit.
McCoy says if you suspect someone that’s shown up at your door isn’t legit, immediately call police.
“We’ll find out if, first of all, if they’ve got a permit. They shouldn’t have a permit for trying to sell services, so tell them to please cease and desist,” McCoy says.
Reputable companies will have proper permits to do home services from the city, McCoy says.
