PEORIA, Ill. (25 News) – A teenager and a man have been charged for their alleged involvement in the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy on Tuesday in Peoria.
25 News reports that 18-year-old Curtis Jones and 27-year-old Jafari Robinson were charged in court on Thursday for cleaning up the scene and conspiring to kill 15-year-old Keyaun Schmitt-Hardimon.
Jones was indicted with one count of conspiracy to commit first degree murder and one count of concealment of homicidal death. He’s accused of putting the 15-year-old in a rug and discussing gunshots with another person the night before the shooting.
Robinson was charged with one count of concealment of homicidal death for allegedly cleaning up blood at the scene.
The prosecutors said around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Peoria Police responded to calls about gunshots at a home on N. Sheridan Road. He said Jones initially answered the door and refused to let officers in, but another person eventually let them inside.
The State said police found a large amount of blood in the home’s basement, and blood on a couch with a bullet hole through it, however, they didn’t discover Schmitt-Hardimon’s body inside a rug until a second walk-through. Police said the 15-year-old had gunshot wounds to the head and neck.
The prosecutor said officers learned that Jones was with the victim and another person at the home the night before the shooting. He said Jones told the other person that “if any gunshots are heard, no one tell his mother.” The other person allegedly fled with a gun in the morning.
Jones’ and Robinson’s detention hearings are scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m. Prosecutors filed a petition to hold Jones in jail until his trial, but Robinson may be released on GPS monitoring and house arrest if he is not held for another case.
