WASHINGTON, Ill. – Just days after the murder of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, elected officials in Washington have signed a pledge to tone down rhetoric that could lead to violence.
The city council voted unanimously Monday night to sign the civility pledge adopted by the Illinois Municipal League.
“In the interest of civility, I pledge to promote civility by listening, being respectful of others, acknowledging that we are all striving to support and improve our community and understanding that we each may have different ideas for achieving that objective.”
Ward IV Council Member Michael McIntyre said it’s important that council members continue to act in a civil manner despite policy differences.
“We’re here to serve people, and violence is never an option,” McIntyre said. “I think we stand united by signing this.”
