PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria County Judge has sentenced Doyle Eugene Nelson, 24, to 20 years in prison for his role in a 2019 murder.
Nelson was 18 at the time of the shooting death of Zarious Fair. He pleaded guilty to aggravated battery in June.
25 News reports Nelson had earlier been found guilty of murder, but that charge was later dropped.
A co-defendant, Zavion Marks, who was a juvenile at the time of the crime, was sentenced to 45 years in prison.
Peoria County Judge Paul Bauer heard from woman Nelson called “Stepmom” who spoke on behalf of Nelson and from Nelson himself.
Nelson apologized for his involvement and said he has grown and matured since the incident.
Nelson’s attorney argued for only a ten year sentence saying Nelson has an eight-year-old daughter.
The judge with little comment issued the 20 year sentence.
Nelson has already served over six years in jail and must serve 85 percent of the prison sentence.
