PEORIA, Ill. – The murder of conservative activist and influencer Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on Wednesday was followed by a lot of politically-charged opinions on social media.
Dr. Barbara Toohill, with Peoria’s Antioch Group, says those posts are weighing heavy on friends being asked to take a side.
“I saw the articles coming out yesterday (Wednesday), and there was this sinking feeling about where things have gotten. And, I suspect a lot of people were sitting with that yesterday (Wednesday),” Toohill says.
Dr. Toohill says when things like this come up, we rush to blame the Democrats or Republicans for what’s happened.
Toohill tells WMBD’s “Greg and Dan”, “I think really what we’re looking at here is mental illness. And, we need to stay there, and kind of look at what we’re doing with that as a society…instead of who am I battling today, and deciding whose fault it is.”
Dr. Toohill says in situations like this that bring out such strong emotions and opinions, the best thing we can do is to stop looking at our phones, and focus on talking with those around us, without placing blame.
