PEKIN, Ill. – An elderly Pekin man accused in the death of his wife will remain in jail.
25 News reports a petition to deny pretrial release to 93-year-old James Pate was granted in Tazewell County court on Thursday. He is charged with two counts of murder in the death of 80-year-old Cheryl Pate on Tuesday at a Pekin house.
An autopsy on Cheryl conducted on Wednesday revealed she suffered multiple sharp force injuries that were unsurvivable.
An affidavit of probable cause claims James allegedly told police that he and Cheryl got into an argument in a vehicle. He claims Cheryl lunged towards him before pushing her away and struck her, before pulling a knife out from the center console and cutting her throat.
Cheryl was taken to a hospital and later died.
