PEORIA, Ill. – Central Illinois will celebrate Labor Day with parades honoring the nation’s workers and unions.
But, one of them, the Peoria area Labor Day Parade, will take a new route this year.
The parade will step off at 11 a.m. at lower Laura Bradley Park, heading west along Farmington Road, and winding up at Raber Packing Co. in West Peoria. The parade previously began in downtown Peoria.
From noon- 4 p.m., Raber will host a family-friendly festival with food, music, and plenty of activities for the kids.
“Coming from a union background and having most of my board former union members, we are excited…and we have been known to put on a pretty good parade,” West Peoria Mayor James Dillon says.
Dillon, along with Scott Haney from the National Association of Letter Carriers Lodge 31 and Scott Howard Jr. of Firefighters Local 50 will serve as Grand Marshals for the parade.
This is the 25th year since the restart of the Peoria area Labor Day Parade.
The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office will be handling traffic control for the parade. Farmington Road will be closed between Main Street and Swords Avenue, as well as Park Road from Farmington to Dakota Avenue during the parade.
