PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria City Council member Denise Jackson announced on Monday she’s seeking another term in office, while also endorsing incumbent Mayor Rita Ali for reelection next year.
Jackson represents District 1, which covers most of South Peoria.
In a release, Jackson says it’s important to continue the work that started under Mayor Ali.
“We’ve just begun to scratch the surface on laying the groundwork for redevelopment of neighborhoods, making infrastructure improvements, and creating safer communities,” Jackson said in her statement.
“With so many capital improvement projects underway and scheduled in the near future, it’s exciting and very rewarding to see transformational changes throughout the city. I look forward to four-more years of making Peoria a city where residents and businesses can thrive and grow,” Jackson says.
Jackson also listed accomplishments during her first term:
- Demolition of both the former McKinley and Harrison Schools
- Two-million-dollar sidewalk project for residents in 61605
- Redevelopment of Kickapoo Terrace Road
- Installation of alley lights throughout neighborhoods
- Trewyn Park $600,000 improvement project
- Churchview Gardens Homes Project
- Half a million-dollar federal grant to rebuild new homes on Southside
- Nearly $7 million dollars in Combined Sewer Overflow work (Southside and North Valley neighborhoods)
- $14-million-dollar reconstruction of Depot Street in the Warehouse District
- Collaborated with IL Department of Transportation for phase one of a $44 million federal infrastructure project on Howett Street and Lincoln Ave. slated for 2025-2029
- Obtained more than $100,000 in grants and sponsorships for summer youth employment program
- Annual neighborhood cleanups (New Town Neighborhood Association President)
Jackson was first elected in 2021, defeating incumbent Denise Moore. That’s the same year Ali was elected mayor.
“I am in full support of Mayor Rita Ali for reelection. She has done a great job,” Jackson told 25 News.
Ali will face two current City Council members, Chuck Grayeb and John Kelly, in the mayor’s race on April 1.
So far, no one other than Jackson has announced they’ll run to represent District 1.
