PEKIN, Ill. — Mayoral candidate Becky Cloyd is challenging the Pekin Election Board’s ruling taking her off the April 4 ballot. Cloyd has been assigned a January 5 court hearing.
The Pekin Election Board recently voted 2-1 to remove Cloyd from the ballot.
Cloyd asked for current Pekin Mayor Mark Luft to recuse himself from the proceedings, since he publicly endorsed one of her opponents, but he refused.
“There is no legal basis for the decision the Pekin Election Board made,” Cloyd said, in a news release. “I am confident this politically motivated decision will not stand up in court and I will be reinstated as a candidate for election on the April 4th ballot. The people who signed my petitions did so legally and lawfully with the intent of allowing me to be a candidate for election. I look forward to the hearing on January 5th and for the opportunity to make what I believe is a strong case to be reinstated as a candidate. The people of Pekin deserve to have a real choice in the election for mayor and I am confident the court will rule in my favor.”
Cloyd’s hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on January 5, at the Tazewell County Circuit Court.
Becky Cloyd, a current member of the Pekin City Council, is running for Mayor. The election is April 4, 2023.
