PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria Police have reported details surrounding an incident where an officer shot a reportedly aggressive dog.
Shortly after 11:30 p.m. Friday, police say officers responded to the 1600 block of W. Aiken on a call for assistance to retrieve property.
According to a PPD news release, when officers arrived, they tried to make contact with the resident of the home, but could also hear a large “Pitbull” dog acting aggressive inside the residence.
Officers say they backed away from the door, which was then opened, only to find the dog charging out at them.
PPD says the dog attacked one of the officers, who then drew his weapon and fire two rounds downward, striking the canine.
The release says the animal “immediately ran away”. However, officers say after a brief search, the dog was located deceased in an area near Hinton and Warren.
PAWS was contacted and responded to the scene.
The officer sustained a dog bite in the upper right thigh area of his uniform pant leg, but the bite did not penetrate his skin area.
No arrest were made.
