PEORIA, Ill. – Public transit in the Peoria area is already affected by the lifting of the federal mask mandate on buses, trains, and planes.
The Greater Peoria Mass Transit District says since the Transportation Security Administration has lifted the mandate after a judge’s ruling Monday, they have, too.
“Passengers of CityLink fixed route services, CityLift paratransit service, and CountyLink rural transportation services are no longer required to wear masks,” said Emily Watson, GPMTD Marketing Coordinator. “That also goes for our bus operators.”
Watson says that also includes inside the Transit Center.
She says yes, bus drivers had some problems getting passengers to wear masks, but that was the exception rather than the rule.
“For the most part, for the last two years, we’ve gotten really good compliance from our passengers with wearing masks,” said Watson. “Personally, when I’m out and about, I see passengers waiting at bus stops, and a lot of them are already masked up.”
Watson says CityLink, CityLift, and CountyLink passengers and drivers can still wear masks if they want. She says there’s no indication right now that the mandate will take effect again.
